DesignAday: Back to Basics: Grouping →
When laying out a user interface, like elements should be grouped together. For example, a set of drawing tools should be collocated, rather than being interspersed with buttons for printing, exporting, and searching. Groups should be separated by space. There may also be a visual separator, such…

HTC Incredible camera vs iPhone 3gs
bijan: For many folks, the mobile phone has become the primary camera. I know I take a ton of pics with my phone.  A few weeks ago, my brother and I were hanging out in the Boston Public Gardens. We happened to take a similar photo of our kids. I used my iPhone and my brother used the HTC Incredible. This is hardly a scientific comparison but the difference is quite noticeable. iPhone 3gs: ...

The Future of Apple's Curated Computing →
“It started with Apple’s tight control on the iPhone app market, the approvals process, and the well-manicured app store. Now, Apple is not only dictating what applications may or may not run on the iPhone or iPad, but they are also dictatingthe language in which apps must be written. Their justification for all of this is “for the good of the user”, but it might just be...

This might not be normal.
As I sit here, downing Cokes (Coke Zero nowadays, just say no to diabetes), eating Kettle chips (thanks Kat!), with two laptops open (one for work, and the other I am setting up to be a media server) along with my desktop playing Pandora (Van Halen if you’re interested) and jailbreaking my iPhone, it just occurred to me: this might not be considered normal behavior. And I am okay with that.

Valve unveils surprise in Steam for Mac's arrival... →
I am happy my Mac friends will finally get the awesomeness of Steam on Wednesday (more computer gamers, better developer/publisher support). But I think a lot of people will be in for a surprise when they realize just how much power and hardware you need to play games at the highest quality. A lot of people will be disappointed, especially the majority of customers who have the lower end iMac. I...

Design Decisions: New Basecamp blank slates -... →
“The blank slate is a screen you see when a data-rich app has no data. For example, if you’re using a tool to manage your projects, but you don’t have any projects in the system yet, you’d be looking at a blank slate. It’s important that the application designer consider this state carefully — you don’t want people staring at an empty screen. A blank slate should help someone get...

iPad Usability: First Findings From User Testing... →
I fall into these inconsistent design traps all the time. Even though I’ve been using an iPhone for 2 years now. Sometimes, I just have no clue where I’m supposed to go or what I am supposed to do. “The iPad etched-screen aesthetic does look good. No visual distractions or nerdy buttons. The penalty for this beauty is the re-emergence of a usability problem we haven’t seen...

Amazing, amazing game. “Braden pointed to the sky, to his mother. He was mobbed by his teammates. He then went into foul ground and hugged his grandmother for a long time. Facebook, Zynga, and buyer-supplier hold up |... →
“The way Facebook now seems to be holding up Zynga – requiring Zynga to use their payments system –  is particularly clever.  First, payments are still very much a “utility like” feature, and arguably one that benefits the platform, so it doesn’t come across as flagrant hold up. It is also clever because – assuming Facebook has insight into Zynga’s profitability – Facebook can charge...

REVIEW: Iron Man 2
Short review: Don’t waste two hours of your life and ~$10 to see this movie. I will sum it up for you here, in my four pillars of a good summer movie. To pass my low, low, low standards for a summer popcorn flick, you have to do at least one of these right. Plot: For summer flicks, I don’t expect a lot. The only thing I expect is a simple story that makes sense. Good v bad. Guy...

And when I get used to them on one device and move back to the other, I am confused all over again. It’s a constant relearning and acclimation process with these two devices.

What's really wrong with baseball - SweetSpot Blog... →
Rob Neyer strikes again: “Spectator sports, the popular ones anyway, are all about movement. During a football play, 22 players are moving. Basketball is at its best when all 10 players are moving. I don’t know anything about hockey or football or mixed martial arts, but I’m guessing they, too, are at their best when they’re at their most dynamic.  And then there’s...
